These fun images capture a group of lion cubs play fighting as they tumble and wrestle in the sand.

The scenes were photographed by Gren Sowerby, 74, from Whitley Bay, during a safari in the Sand River area of the Maasai Mara last week.
Gren said he had been watching a pride of 22 lions, known as the Sand River pride, when several cubs began interacting, chasing and swiping at each other on the riverbank.

In one image, two cubs rear up on their hind legs, paws raised as they face off. In another, one cub appears to tap another on the head before they begin to grapple, while a further frame shows a youngster mid-leap as it bounds towards a sibling.

Gren said:“They were constantly playing, chasing and tumbling over each other in the sand.
“It was great to watch. They’d have a little scrap and then settle straight back down together again – it was all part of growing up and learning.”

He added that although the behaviour looked dramatic at times, it was entirely playful.
“You could see there was no aggression in it,” he said. “They were just enjoying themselves and learning how to interact with each other.”
Gren said he took the photographs from a vehicle while on a game drive, capturing the fast-moving action as it unfolded.
