An online retail giant Etsy has bowed to mounting pressure from animal rights activists and banned the sale of fur, in a move campaigners are hailing as a major victory for animal welfare.

Etsy, the global marketplace best known for handmade and artistic goods, confirmed it will introduce a fur-free policy from August 2026 after being bombarded with more than 100,000 messages from campaigners.

The push was led by PETA, whose supporters around the world urged the platform to cut ties with an industry long criticised for its treatment of animals.

The decision places Etsy alongside a growing list of major retailers and online platforms that have already turned their backs on fur, amid rising public concern over animal cruelty.

Animals such as foxes and minks are routinely kept in cramped wire cages on fur farms, often suffering from untreated injuries, disease and extreme psychological distress. They are then killed using methods including gassing, electrocution or having their necks broken, practices that welfare groups have repeatedly condemned as inhumane.

By banning fur, Etsy is distancing itself from a trade increasingly seen as incompatible with modern consumer values, where ethical sourcing and animal welfare are becoming key considerations for shoppers.

But attention is now turning to other online retail giants accused of lagging behind.

Campaigners have singled out Temu, claiming the site continues to sell products made from fur, angora and other wild-animal materials, despite growing awareness of the suffering involved.

They are calling on Temu to follow suit and join platforms such as ASOS and SHEIN in banning animal-derived materials linked to cruelty.

For activists, Etsy’s decision proves one thing, that sustained public pressure can force even the biggest companies to change course.
