Adverts for products currently tested on animals should carry a clear warning so shoppers can make informed choices, a petition is demanding.

More than 2,200 people have backed the call for a standardised disclosure or symbol to appear in advertising, making animal testing information visible before consumers buy.

The petition, launched by Jacqui Wright, urges the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) to consult on changing advertising rules.

It argues that while voluntary schemes such as Leaping Bunny help shoppers identify cruelty-free products, consumers seeking to avoid products currently tested on animals lack equivalent information in adverts.

Writing in the petition, Jacqui said: “Consumers deserve transparency. If a product is currently tested on animals, that information should be made clear whenever it is advertised.”

Wright has also created campaign graphics urging the public to put a simple question to brands advertising on social media: “Is this product tested on animals?”

One graphic, featuring a white rabbit behind bars, carries the message “Small question. Big impact” and encourages petition supporters to question companies publicly about their testing policies.

A second urges people to leave the question beneath adverts, arguing that doing so can raise awareness and make companies consider consumers’ concerns.

The graphics promote the hashtag #IsItTestedOnAnimals, turning a question in a comments section into a call for greater accountability.

The petition seeks disclosure across advertising covered by the UK Advertising Codes, including newspapers, magazines, online adverts, social media and posters.

It calls for transparency rather than a ban on the products concerned, allowing consumers to decide what they are willing to buy.
