Why a little licking could help dogs settle this autumn
As darker evenings, wetter walks and firework season approach, a simple activity could give dogs something soothing to focus on: licking.
Most dog owners have seen how intently their pet can work on a favourite treat. Offering a small amount of soft food on a textured surface encourages slow, repetitive licking, giving dogs a gentle activity to concentrate on when their surroundings feel unsettled.
Andrew Hale, emotional wellbeing expert at Pet Remedy, said: “Licking is a natural behaviour for dogs, and giving them a safe opportunity to do it can help them slow down and focus. As we head into autumn, some dogs may find changes in routine or the sound of fireworks difficult. A licking activity can be one useful part of helping them feel more comfortable, especially when they’re free to engage with it at their own pace.”
It can also bring a little variety to a rainy day indoors. Owners can offer pet-safe wet food, plain yoghurt or a small amount of xylitol-free peanut butter, checking the ingredients and supervising their dog while they eat.
