Ministers were today said to be preparing to give animals a voice in Parliament, by appointing a dog to the House of Lords.

The claim, revealed on April 1st suggested the Labour Government would usher in a new era of animal representation, with Defra Minister Emma Reynolds MP allegedly backing the unprecedented move as part of its wider Animal Welfare Strategy.

And the chosen candidate? Not a seasoned politician, but Scooby, a 12-year-old rescue dog who has already won a devoted following online after being freed from a life spent chained up.

According to the tongue-in-cheek announcement, Scooby would take his place on the red benches as a champion for animal welfare, bringing lived experience, and a fair amount of charm, to the corridors of power.

Reynolds was jokingly quoted as saying the pioneering pup would not receive the House of Lords’ daily attendance allowance, but would instead be rewarded with his favourite treats, sausages and cheese.

When asked for comment on his new role, Scooby reportedly told assembled journalists: “Woof! Woof! Woof!”

Soon-to-be Lord Scooby is the poster dog for the Unchained campaign, founded by animal welfare campaigner Eduardo Gonçalves, which is working to end the widespread and often hidden practice of keeping dogs tethered for life.

Before his rescue, Scooby is spent ten years chained up in Portugal, deprived of proper shelter, stimulation and companionship, conditions campaigners say are endured by millions of dogs worldwide.

Now safe, loved and thriving, he has become a symbol of hope and is perfectly placed to be a peer of the realm.

The news comes as supporters prepare for the launch of the Unchained Freedom Walk on April 4, a nationwide call to action inviting animal lovers to take part in a symbolic 5km walk wherever they are.

The event marks the official launch of the Unchained campaign and aims to raise both awareness for dogs like Scooby, and medical bills for rescued Sirius and puppies Vinnie and Chuck which the campaign pays for.

Campaigners say the walk is about more than just fundraising, it is about sending a clear message that the lifelong chaining of dogs is unacceptable in a modern, compassionate society.

Participants are being encouraged to share their walks on social media, helping to amplify the campaign’s reach and ensure that stories like Scooby’s are no longer the norm.
